The Biggest Crossover Battle Ever!
Company: Capcom
Product: Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken X Street Fighter
After weeks of rumors and speculation, Capcom finally unveiled the secret it has been keeping (and as a fighting game fan... it's a doozie!). During the Capcom panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono announced that he was working on a new crossover fighting game. Before he could finish, Namco's own Tekken producer, Katsuhiro Harada, came out to tease the announcement further. The games are Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Yes. Two games. One for each franchise.

The debate has always been: "Which game is better: Street Fighter or Tekken?" Never mind that both games have been inherently different for years now and the closest they ever came to being comparable was when Capcom experimented with the Street Fighter EX series, (which it then wisely dropped). But people like to pick sides. So now they can have their battle lines drawn with two different games. Street Fighter X Tekken will utilize the same fighting engine found in Street Fighter IV, while Tekken X Street Fighter will use the Tekken 6 fighting engine. Both creators have already committed to work on both games with their best teams and promise to honor the spirit of the opposite franchise. Tekken characters, like Kazuya and Nina Williams, will get a stylized 2D treatment. And Street Fighter characters, like Ryu and Chun-Li, will be adapted to fit into Tekken's more realistic 3D-based world.

The biggest announcement about both games will be the tag feature. Both series have dabbled in the past with tag-teams. Capcom has the wildly successful Marvel vs. Capcom and Namco had Tekken Tag Tournament, so this comes as an extra bonus for eager fans who want to settle the score once and for all.

For me, my only concern lies in the translation of the fighting mechanics. Admittedly, that is a big concern. Tekken games use a four button system (one button for each limb,) and I don't know how that will translate into Street Fighter's six button system (weak, medium, fierce), as well as EX moves and Ultra combos. The same can be said for Street Fighter going into a world with side steps and juggles. It'll be interesting to say the least, but I hope neither studio decides to make a party-style game like Marvel vs. Capcom or Tatsunoko vs. Capcom because those games already occupy that space. I have faith that both games will be excellent despite my concerns, but I am just being cautious.

No release date has been said, but Ono and Harada told eager participants at Comic-Con to enjoy Marvel vs. Capcom 3 while they wait. So it's at least a year away. In the meantime, why not enjoy a special little teaser trailer Capcom whipped up for their announcement? And with enough searching you can also find some bootlegged videos of actual gameplay from the show floor.
