THQ To Unleash Red Faction: Armageddon
Company: THQ
Product: Red Faction: Armageddon
Gamers who have been itching to blow up more stuff on Mars may find themselves back on the Red Planet sooner than expected. THQ has officially announced the fourth game in the Red Faction franchise. It's subtitle? Armageddon.

The first three Red Faction games are self-contained stories that rarely venture outside of their own narrative bubbles. There are references to previous games in both the second and third games, but that's about as far as the canon goes. Red Faction: Armageddon is different. It will be a true-blue sequel to 2009's critically acclaimed Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Armageddon takes place about fifty years after the events of Guerrilla. Apparently, fifty years of progress doesn't mean much; the surface of Mars has become incapable of sustaining human life. The colonists now have no choice but to live in the underground mines. Guerrilla protagonists Alec Mason and Samanya have settled down and raised a family. You play as their grandson, Darius. He is the reason for the game's subtitle; he unleashes an ancient evil that threatens all life on Mars. Darius undertakes a dangerous mission to save Mars, one that will take him to the planet's very core. It goes without saying that the titular band of revolutionary fighters will be involved in Darius' quest.

Volition is promising some serious technological wizardry when it comes to the physics engine. Red Faction: Armageddon will build upon the foundation established in Guerrilla with Darius' Nano Forge abilities. This means players will have access to reconstruction technology and physics-based weapons.

THQ isn't being specific with dates, but Red Faction: Armageddon has a launch window of March 2011.
