Time is now a resource that the people of Middle Earth are running out of. In this third part to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Frodo and The Ring move finally into the land of Mordor, to unmake the One Ring. Gollum, Frodo and Sam?s treacherous guide, betrays the two and they are forced to guide themselves to the final destination of Mount Doom.

While Frodo is attempting the most important quest of destroying The Ring, the rest of the fellowship are scattered between Rohan and Minas Tirith, and a host of orcs and other foul creatures are on their way to destroy the world of men. Having to face the orcs of Mordor, the wicked men of the south, and a company of foes coming from the sea, is there any hope for the dawn of man, and the return of the King?

The Return of the King Special Edition DVD is the kind of DVD that makes others look plain. Inside, there is a wealth of special features, each one of them crafted specifically for the DVD. There are over a dozen documentaries on everything from the adaptation of the book to a motion picture, to the filming and post-production process. There are even galleries with thousands of pictures that can be perused at your own leisure. Add to this the fact that an entire 50 minutes of extra scenes has been added to the movie, and you have the best special edition DVD that has been seen since the creation of the format (or of course, since The Two Towers and The Fellowship of the Rings DVDs).

If you are at all a fan of the series, then you should forgo the purchase of the standard Return of the King DVD in favor of this. It contains more than enough features to justify the slight price difference between the two versions. If you have never seen the movies, or aren?t that big of a fan, the fact that it?s a lot longer than the theatrical version may be a bit of a turn off. However, I would still recommend getting this DVD, as it is one that will be enjoyed for years to come.
