Season Three starts off immediately after the second season with Lock, Desmond and Echo having figured out exactly what happens when you don't push that damned button every 108 minutes and Sawyer, Jack and Kate being held captive by The Others. This season feels like two since the first half of it seems to focus on the later trio as Jack is coerced into operating on the lead Other, Ben, and possibly falling in love with another Other, Juliet. Meanwhile, Sawyer and Kate find themselves in cages (apparently meant for polar bears) and doing hard labor. This story arc takes place during the first half of the season, and it is really slow. In fact, during its air, this was the pre-Christmas portion of the show, and the very lengthy time between the first half and the second half caused a lot of people to lose faith in the series. Thankfully, the show picks up momentum before too long and becomes a non-stop roller coaster ride to the end when another main character bites the dust.
In a very Lost fashion, many questions get answered in this season. More information is learned about the ever mysterious Others, and more of the main survivors' back stories are revealed (including a few pre-crash connections that even the characters aren't aware of). But as viewers have come to expect, with every question answered, two more arise. At least we finally find out what happened to the members of the Dharma Initiative and why The Others keep on taking children and pregnant women.
The last disc in this set is all special features. Here you will find all of the features that were on the DVD like a featurette about the literary references found all over the series or never before seen flashback scenes (and of course the standard outtakes and bloopers reels), but also a few Blu-ray exclusives, the most notable of which is "Access: Granted" where creators Lindelof and Cuse give fairly definitive answers about some of the things that have happened in the series. Questions like "Is Desmond the sole cause of the plane crash?" and "Does Walt have psychic powers?" are posed and the pair comes out to say yay or nay. Each of the dozen or so topics discussed in this feature have been hot topics on the show for a while now (like a definitive answer concerning the origins of the polar bears), and Cuse and Lindelof tell it like it is, that is unless the show hasn't actually revealed the truth yet. Essentially, this is their way of saying "stop arguing over these points; we didn't lie when we hinted at these facts." Still, it's fun to take the time and go through this feature not only hearing what they have to say, but also comments from several leading entertainment media personalities and also see some clips from the show pertaining to the subject.
The other Blu-ray exclusive is a series of featurettes called Blu-Prints that goes through major sets from the season and explains how and why they look the way they do, from an art-director standpoint, that is. This is a good set of features to watch if you have plans of getting into set design.
Between the visual quality and extra features, the Blu-ray version of Lost: The Complete Third Season, The Unexplored Experience is a must have for Lost fans. If you already have a Blu-ray player, and want to spend some 900 minutes in front of it, then definitely pick up this set. Heck, if you are a big enough fan, it might be worth purchasing the player anyway.
