Ben Logan (Aaron Eckhart) and his young daughter, Amy (Liana Liberato) are living in Brussels while Ben works on security products for a division of Halgate Industries. When Ben and his team make some startling discoveries about the products they are testing, Ben soon finds his workplace, co-workers and his entire digital trail being systematically erased, as if they never existed. As the pieces come together for him, he takes Amy and goes on the run to try to figure out why this has happened. Being ex-black ops certainly doesn’t hurt things as Ben is pretty adaptive, but his already-strained relationship with Amy is worsened when she discovers this side of her dad that she never knew existed, although she proves herself fairly capable as well. To make matters worse, Ben’s former CIA colleague, Anna Brandt (Olga Kurylenko, Max Payne) is tasked with bringing him in, along with the evidence he holds. Can she be trusted or has she gone to the dark side?
Erased is a decent thriller and I love Aaron Eckhart and Liana Liberato as actors. They are both great, I just didn’t find the story to be super compelling. I know it’s difficult to do yet another thriller based on a wronged CIA agent and they tried to twist it a little bit by adding in the human element of the relationship between Ben and his daughter, but it just didn’t grab me. It’s not a bad movie by any means; it’s just not that exciting either. The only special feature is a behind the scenes featurette clocking in at less than five minutes. If you like spy flicks and you can catch it on cable or on Netflix, go for it. It’s just not a movie that can compete with something exciting like World War Z or The Call.
