eluminX
Score: 95%
Developer: Auravision

Function:

The Auravision eluminX is an illuminated keyboard. You may have seen some of the keyboards modified by PC modders that incorporated strip electroluminescent lighting behind their keys. The idea is much the same here, but the difference is that the light was engineered into the product, not added afterwards. The keys are clear and the back-lighting is uniformed throughout the entire keyboard, rather than lines of light tracing around strips of keys.

Performance:

The keyboard looks nice and feels nice. I've used mine with a desktop unit and a laptop, but I find that my favorite way to use it is with my laptop on a table in front of me and the eluminX resting in my lap. The eluminX is very comfortable to use in this position and allows for typing and coding into the wee hours of the night, with its internal illumination. I find that the lack of adjustable feet (for height) can cause the eluminX to be less than ideal if your computer desk doesn't have an adjustable keyboard tray. These adjustable feet are supposed to be an upcoming feature on future versions of the product, as is a USB version.

As for looks, if you're wanting to put together a killer LAN party box that looks just as slick and sinister as it plays, the elumiX looks the part. Meanwhile, the short-throw slimline full-size keys help the performance to match the looks. Bear in mind, however, that the lighting in the eluminX is not extremely bright. In well-lit conditions and daylight, the light may be imperceivable. In darkness or low-light conditions, the glow is quite useful and bright, illuminating the keys and allowing for good visibility of the location and labeling of the keys.

Drawbacks & Problems::

The only complaints I have with the eluminX keyboard would be the lack of adjustable feet, the lack of a USB version and the lack of a manual switch for the lighting. The first two concerns are supposed to be addressed in upcoming versions of the keyboards (and are not horrendous anyway) and the manual switch for the lighting may not be such a big deal, as the power drain seems to be quite nominal. The ability to see what you're typing in low-light conditions and the sheer coolness of the evil glow that emanates from within the keyboard seems to more than make up for any of the issues mentioned above.
