Model 251
Score: 95%
Developer: Altec Lansing

Function:

The Altec Lansing Model 251 is a 5.1 surround amplified speaker system for use with your PC, video game consoles, CD player, MP3 player, DVD, VCR or whatever else might be in your entertainment system. The satellite speakers are shielded speakers, making them acceptable for placement near your monitor. (Your right front speaker has controls for the system right on the front, so you want to keep that one within reach anyway.)

Performance:

The signal response of the Model 251 5.1 speaker system is excellent. (Freq. Res.: 35 Hz - 18kHZ). The 'compact subwoofer' is actually a pretty decent size for a system designed for a PC (that's a good thing), and has a nice, solid deep bass response. The satellite speakers have a clear midrange and a crisp high, revealing things I had previously not heard in both music recordings and games on my PC. The speakers have two listening modes specifically engineered to maximize the quality of the output depending on the number of inputs used. There is a 6 channel mode that acts as a true 5.1 surround system, and a 2/4 channel system that simulates surround sound (very well) from two or four channel sound cards, CD players, Mini-Disc players, MP3 players, and with an included 'Y' adapter, the console of your choice or even a DVD player or a VCR.

I was very impressed with the volume these 90 watt speakers were capable of. But, just as impressive is how smartly the speakers are designed; not only is the appearance stylish and sleek, but the installation is made simple and basically fool-proof by not only color-coded cords, but custom designed connectors, designed so that the cords that come on the speakers can only be plugged into the correct holes without modification. I will point out, however, that the design does not preclude over the counter AV cables from plugging into the connections, allowing for extension cords if you wish to move back your rear speakers. (This is not suggested by either Altec Lansing or this website, but it could be done.) This would likely throw off the 5.1 surround sound integrity, as the rear speakers would have longer cords than the front speakers, but it might allow for installation in a larger entertainment area.

Drawbacks & Problems::

The only problem I can see someone having with the Model 251 speaker system is in the length of the wires on the rear speakers. A ten foot cable is generous for a controller, since it goes from in front of you to the front of a console. Since the cables for the rear speakers go from the rear of the subwoofer to behind the gamer, however, the ten feet can fall a bit short. (Bear in mind, some of the length is used to get the speakers up off the ground - otherwise the cords would hang in the air and be a tripping hazard.)

If you have a smaller to medium sized area to set the speakers up in or plan to place the rear speakers in a place when you're playing a game and put them out of the way when your not, then definitely go out now and pick one of these up. For that matter, if your desktop/entertainment center is not too high, moving the subwoofer further towards the back could help allow for more distance for the rear speakers (by using up extra slack in the front speakers). I would definitely suggest these speakers based on quality... ...to anyone.

Minimum System Requirements:

Anything with a sound output of at least to channels. Seriously - the Altec Lansing Model 251 speakers out of the box are ready to hook up to a high end 6 channel sound card, a 2 or 4 channel sound card, the console of your choice (with included 'Y' adapter) or (better yet) a system selector, your DVD player, MP3 player, or VCR... You name it, if it puts out sound, it will sound better through the 251's.
