R80
Score: 80%
Developer: Saitek

Function:

This is quick and dirty at its best. This wheel isn't meant for the hardcore racing fan, but more for someone who just likes to piddle around with arcade type racing games. No foot pedals, no complicated software, no force feedback, and a low price of less than 20 dollars makes the R80 a prime choice for those who want to play in a few moments notice.

Performance:

This basic wheel sports two ergonomically placed gas and brake pedals behind the wheel. Four other buttons adorn the face of the wheel, and are also well within reach of even a child's hands. The actual wheel has a maximum rotating distance of 180 degrees, and while this won't appeal to those who like to lean into their turns, it does satisfy the simple gaming experiences that less ambitious racing games offer. And talk about quick, if you have a serial or game port, you'll be playing within seconds of taking it out of the box.

A clamp is provided that allows the wheel to be secured firmly on almost any ordinarily shaped desk, even those big ones you had in kindergarten. A pivoting head on the end of the screw also allows for inclines or declines, bringing the fun to those whom are horizontally challenged.

Features:
  • Compact design that saves desk space
  • Low price of under 20 dollars
  • Gas and brake pedals located behind the wheel
  • Serial or game port hook up for quick and easy installation
  • 4 easily accessible buttons on the wheel's face

Drawbacks & Problems::

Unfortunately, with such low standards comes the inevitably lowered quality. The small turning arc is suited for mostly Pole Position type games, and the lack of force feedback might give some the feeling of being removed from the action. The gas and brake pedals, though a good engineering design, still don't let you feel like you're really racing. Only four buttons will not suffice for a lot of the top notch racing games, making the R80 suitable for small children, people with budget problems, or those who just want to get their feet wet with the racing genre.
