BattleTanx: Global Assault

Score: 80%

Publisher: 3DO
Developer: 3DO
Media: Cartridge/1
Players: 1 - 4
Genre: Action

Graphics & Sound:

How can I put this? The graphics for BattleTanx: Global Assault were... not good. As a matter of fact, the only thing that kept this good game from being great was the graphics. I thought I was playing on a Super Nintendo. I do have to admit, even though the graphics sucked, it was smooth. I can give up some for that. But, everything was blurry and blocky. It was an eyesore. I understand that there was a lot going on (explosions and lots of tanks), but still, I need to see better shapes and detail. The sound was great. I loved the sweet music of blowing up the other tanks, but I hated to watch it. It was a few steps up from the Atari, but a step back from the first BattleTanx.

Gameplay:

Remember way back when on Atari? Remember the game Battle Tanks? Well, this is the sequel to the N64 version of that game. Many changes have been made since the top down view Atari game. This is a first person 3D viewer. The object: blow up the other tanks. Easy enough? Want options – you’ve got plenty of them here. You can play a one or two player campaign. Or, for strictly multi action, play in Deathmatch, Battlelord, Tank Wars, Frenzy, Convoy, Hold ‘Em, or Family mode; plenty of fast paced action for you and up to three other people. What this game lacks in graphics, it makes up for in gameplay. With twelve tanks to choose from and countless power-ups and upgrades, the options are limitless. The replay ability of this title is high. This is one you won’t easily grow tired of. Simple game – kill or be killed. Only the best tanks will survive.

Difficulty:

In campaign mode, you can change the level of difficulty. You can also change the options (such as unlimited ammo and stuff like that). Even on the most difficult settings, an experienced gamer would have no problem with Global Assault. It’s not too easy for the good gamer, and the novice can tune it down to fit his skill. In multiplayer action, don’t play my roommate; he’ll kick your... let’s just say you’ll lose. It’s only going to be as hard as your opponent. I felt that the gameplay was smooth and the game was not hard to get use to. This is one you jump right into and start playing immediately.

Game Mechanics:

BattleTanx: Global Assault handled well. Move around and shoot everything (except team members of course). The rumble feature is nice, if you don’t mind the extra weight of the rumble pack. I am one of the few people who likes the layout of the 64 controller, and the default layout of BattleTanx: Global Assault works out wonderfully. The tank responded well to the buttons and the analog movement was smooth and precise. Smooth gameplay, responsive mechanics, and lack-luster graphics makes this a good game to pick up and give a shot or two.
