Graphics & Sound: Do you want my first reaction or overall? How about both? Initially, I couldn't believe how bad the sound was!!! I mean, come on. Can't this British announcer say more than 5 phrases? Well, it got better, as I soon realized that in game, he sucks, but out of the game he says a lot! In fact, he says so much, Test Drive Le Mans is in 3 languages: English, French, & Spanish. The graphics of Test Drive Le Mans are only above average, but this is a good thing, as the framerate of the game keeps the fast pace of racing smooth and effective. Even with 12 cars on the track, I did not ever notice a slowdown in gameplay.
Gameplay: Keeping with the fast-paced racing, Test Drive Le Mans has a great mix of driving modes. Of these modes, the Le Mans 24 Hour mode is the most distinguishable. Why? Well, it's just that, 24 REAL-TIME hours!!! You do have the option of shorter periods of time, but I think it's about time that a racing game actually gives the player the option of truly simulating its real-life counterpart. Way to go, Infogrames!!! Other modes of play include: Arcade (3 modes within), Championship (race an entire season in one of three race classes), and Multi-player (4 modes). There is a great mix in Test Drive Le Mans to satisfy all who attempt to outlast the competition. And within the racing, you will have the added difficulty of the elements to contend with.
Difficulty: Select between Amateur and Professional. In Amateur, all you need to do is race to win, with the occasional pit stop to refuel. In Professional, using the competition as a steering aid while cornering has a downside...longer pit stops. You will have to repair body damage, replace tires, refuel, etc. With a little practice, you should be able to outlast and out drive everyone else to victory. Added difficulty comes with some unique features in the game, including a blinding sun and pitch black night driving. And let me tell you, as the sun rises and sets during gameplay (coolest feature I've ever seen in a racing title), you will be effected as the harsh contrast will make that approaching corner seem invisible!!!
Game Mechanics: Test Drive Le Mans is analog compatible, so controlling your car is all you, baby! Terrain also affects your car's performance, as grass will make you slide, and sand will slow you down. Stay on the track or you will never hold that trophy above your head in victory. The button configuration is perfect too. You even have the option of using the right analog stick as your gas and brake pedals. If you are a die hard racing fan, this is the game for you. The simple option to race for 24 consecutive hours (save option in the pits) will have you drooling. If you aren't a die hard, Test Drive Le Mans is still worth a strong rental as it is a solid racing title and will test your ability on the open road.
