Jackie Chan: Stuntmaster

Score: 91%
ESRB: Everyone
Publisher: Midway
Developer: Midway
Media: CD/1
Players: 1
Genre: Action

Graphics & Sound:

Well, for starters, Jackie himself was motion-captured for this game, so that is a huge plus. It's more of a cartooned version of him, but the likeness and attitude is unmistakably Jackie Chan. He also did the hilarious voice-overs, which are scattered heavily throughout the game. They are all quite corny, yet endearing. For instance, fall into the water on the Waterfront level and Jackie says, 'I've got a sinking feeling'. This game is sure to get a smile from any Jackie Chan fan.

Gameplay:

I previewed a beta of this title about a year and a half ago and really enjoyed it. I was pleased to see that the final version is even better, and although it has changed a good bit, still retains the same feel that I remember. The storyline has changed though, and instead of Jackie chasing a murderer on his movie set, he is a delivery boy for his grandfather's company. Grandpa gets kidnapped by the requisite bad guys, and it's Jackie to the rescue, of course. Levels include Chinatown, Waterfront, Sewer, Rooftops and Factory and provide a good setting for the game. They are all designed to allow Jackie to show off his crazy moves and will have you running from trains and trucks, balancing on top of a variety of things (moving and not), jumping up walls and on top of them, etc. It's great fun, any way you look at it.

Jackie will spend his time running through the levels with a constant barrage of enemies jumping in his way. Of course, as luck would have it, there usually seems to be a fish or a pot or a broom, etc to pick up and smack someone with - in grand Jackie style, no less. There is a life meter for each enemy you encounter, and I liked this little feature as it gets crowded on screen at times and that way I can judge who is going to die next. All in all, great arcade-y style fighting fun.

Difficulty:

The Difficulty level is pretty on target. There are enough obstacles and enemies to keep you on your toes, but not so many as to be frustrating. Bosses aren't too bad once you find the right move to do on them, but still provide some challenge. A player could probably get through the entire game pretty quickly if they put their mind to it, but getting through the game with an A rating from Jackie (on your fighting style and such) and collecting all of the Red and Gold Dragons (some hidden, some not) is a different story altogether. Good stuff.

Game Mechanics:

Jackie has a host of groovy moves including his trademark running up the wall thing, jumping in mid-air, grabbing an enemy by the shirt and launching himself offa the guy's chest, and much, much more. Hey, just not moving Jackie for a few seconds is great fun too as his antics are hilarious. I did find that, at times, Jackie did not do exactly what I wanted him to do. Basically, the controls are not quite as tight as I would have liked them to be, but generally I find the button-mashing calisthenics save the day anyway. I did find myself getting rather bored during the ridiculously long load times in between levels. Nonetheless, if you are a Jackie Chan fan, this game is a must-have. If you like an arcade style fighting platform, you'll like this game too.
