If you want to make it anywhere in kids entertainment these days, you can't go wrong with things that are cheap, collectable, and allow them to compete with friends. A few years ago it was Pogz, which was followed by Poke'mon, which has recently been replaced by Yu-Gi-Oh. For those without kids, or who are completely in the dark about the whole Yu-Gi-Oh phenomena, a little background is in order.

Yu-Gi-Oh began in 1996 as a comic in Shonen Jump, Japan's largest weekly comic book. The comic chronicled the adventures of Yugi, a young boy who possesses the 'Millennium Puzzle', an ancient artifact that allows him to transform into the 'Game King' whenever he is challenged in the world's most popular card game, Duel Monsters. Since its debut, Yu-Gi-Oh has gone on to spawn a popular trading card game, a hit cartoon on Kids WB, and several GameBoy and PlayStation games.

When you consider that the video game versions of Yu-Gi-Oh consistently rank in the top 10 of most retail sales lists, it should come as no surprise that Konami is bringing the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise to the PS2. Entitled Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelist of the Roses, the game will trace the lineage of both Yugi and Kaiba as they battle characters from the TV show. Along with all the graphical upgrades that come with the franchise's next-gen jump, players will have access to 680 cards from the game, as well as a brand new Card Movement Battle System. As an added bonus, the game will also come packaged with three exclusive cards for the trading card game. Yu-Gi-Oh: Duelist of the Roses is scheduled to be released sometime early this year. Until then, these screenshots should wet your appetite.
