In the month of June, Sony Computer Entertainment America continued to lead a healthy videogame industry, with PlayStation 2 remaining the top selling console in North America. Since dropping the price of PlayStation 2 to $149 in May, Sony Computer Entertainment America today reports that just two months later, the company has sold more than one million PlayStation 2 computer entertainment systems in North America.

June was the first full-month at the new price point, with June NPD data indicating that sales of PlayStation 2 were up nearly 69 percent from the month prior. Impressive growth at this stage in the lifecycle and during what is traditionally thought of as the slow season in the videogame industry, the summer. In fact, consumer demand for PlayStation 2 has been consistently high from day one and especially during these summer months.

"It has always been our unique business challenge to keep product pipelines in adequate supply to keep in-step with demand. With PlayStation 2 continuing to dominate the overall installed base of the current next generation systems with over 60 percent market share."

June NPD data also showed an increase in U.S. console software sales, up 26 percent year over year. According to the June NPD data, six out of the top ten titles for the month are PlayStation 2 titles, with two of the other four titles on Xbox also appearing on PlayStation 2.
