An eight year old girl and her eleven year old brother witness the murder of their parents during their childhood. Quite a gruesome murder it is too, big flashy knife, lots and lots of blood everywhere. They are killed by... the Boogeyman. Or it could have just been an intruder hiding in a closet. But to the two kids, they are determined it was the Boogeyman.
Flash forward ten years and we see the older brother, Henry (Matt Cohen), being released from a mental institution to the care of his younger sister, Laura (Danielle Savre). Henry had been in treatment to get over his fear of the dark (and the Boogeyman) stemming from their parent's death, but has since been cured. Laura, on the other hand, after a bad night decides that she should go seek the same treatment that worked for Henry. Laura joins several others in the mental ward taking her brother's place, even down to his room. These others have a variety of issues, like agoraphobia, germ phobia, and "cutting."
So now we have a relatively familiar plotline. Six late teens and an authority figure or two, all stuck in one place together trying to figure out who or what is forcing them to face their own worst nightmares and then killing them. Honestly though, it was quite enjoyable. There wasn't a bad actor in the bunch. Not to say they were all award winners, but still no one that just made us cringe. It also wasn't obvious, to us at least, who or what the killer was. They did a good job of throwing the suspicion between the supernatural and the various humans, leaving us continually changing who or what we thought did what.
The DVD also includes both the full screen and the widescreen mode on the same disc, which makes it really convenient to not worry if you're buying the right format or not. You can also watch the movie with commentaries with the director Jeff Betancourt and writer Brian Sieve, or commentaries with actors and producers. There's also a 5 minute feature that pieces together clips of the movie with pictures and videos of the makeup and special effects that were used to create the movie.
To sum it all up, entrails spilling out, electrocution, maggots, and many more horrors - this movie has them all. If you are a fan of the Saw movies, you'll enjoy Boogeyman 2. If you like your horror to make you guess at least a little bit to go along with the blood, guts and gore, you should check it out too. If you're squeamish, though, you should probably go back to the Disney selections.
