In the spirit of Bill Murray's Groundhog Day, The Last Day of Summer is Nickelodeon's approach to what it would be like for a child to wake up every day, only to repeat the previous day. Luke freaks out in the early days of his repetition, and tries to convince everyone that he's not crazy and that it's not simply a case of déjà vu. But as the days go on, he realizes that he is never going to get past the day of the town festival, so he begins taking advantage and teaching himself how to skate, among other things. This does come at the loss of his friendships, however, but that's a price Luke is willing to chance because he knows that his friendships will be reunited again the next day, and again the next day...
During this seemingly stoppage of time, Luke polishes up and becomes a semi-pro skateboarder, and takes the time to memorize all of the happenings around him in order to have evidence to convince people of his predicament the next time he seems them. But most importantly, after many, many repeat days, Luke finally musters up the courage to talk with the love of his young life.
As the days wear on, Luke begins to get desperate and even goes to his mother, who of course doesn't believe him. As a last resort, he even talks with his sister, and she finally tells him that she was kidding about how entering middle school would be torturous, which of course, Luke believed, especially with the class bully and his gang constantly picking on him.
The Last Day of Summer is a movie that is definitely geared toward the younger crowd, and even includes a few life lessons, especially that of "be careful what you wish for" and "your friends are irreplaceable." While the acting is not at a blockbuster level, this made for TV movie does entertain and has its humorous moments. The Last Day of Summer is sure to be a title that kids will enjoy.
