Since the last season of Grey’s didn’t end on a huge catastrophe, this season definitely opens on one, and one that could happen any day. Most people don’t realize that Seattle is on a huge earthquake fault line since it hasn’t been active, but that could change any day. The very first episode doesn’t go quite that far, but it does question what would happen when a huge sinkhole just opens up, maybe setting up future problems? Christina and Meredith are living together taking care of the child together, and Derek and Owen are commiserating together. Christina still hasn’t gotten the abortion as she can’t face it without Owen’s blessing. Meredith is fired over her actions, which means that everyone hates Alex even more than they did before for telling on her. Since the adoption isn’t final, when the social worker figures out that Meredith and Derek are living apart and Meredith’s been fired, she wants to talk to them both. Meredith freaks out and takes Zola and just leaves. Of course, before the end of the episode, the chief and her friends have things mostly fixed. This season is going to be a rough one for relationships and some won’t be figured out even by the end of the season.
On the work front, the new interns have just arrived at the hospital. The fifth year residents are now standing in as lead surgeons. The chief steps down as Chief of Surgery and makes Owen the new chief. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is a bit hurt by this decision as everyone knew that she was the heir apparent. Christina is finding that she likes having interns to abuse. Meredith and Derek are talking, but things still aren’t happy between them. Meredith is trying to find a service now that she won’t work in Neuro with Derek. She goes to OB/GYN for a while, but babies and Meredith aren’t a really good combination. In a sad twist of fate, Altman’s husband dies on Christina’s operating table. They didn’t tell Christina who she was operating on though. When she finds out she killed him, it really messes with her head. I mean, he wasn’t just a patient. It also messes with Altman and the relationship between Christina and Teddie, which is very bad for Christina’s future career. April is trying to handle the job as Chief resident and no one is really listening to her. Meredith needs to pick a specialty. Everyone says she should do general like her mom, but she doesn’t want to. Alex is having it rough trying to get back into the group after snitching on Meredith, but Alex isn’t one to care about what other people think. He’s focused on his career in Pediatrics. At the end of the season, all of our original interns are going to have to decide where they will accept jobs, which leaves quite a few of them and some of the current staff on a plane. As you might have seen on the previews, the plane crashes. A majority of those on board are hurt and one of our main cast is killed, permanently. I’m not going to tell you who is off of the show, but I will say that it’s not the person I expected to die. I would much have preferred one of the others killed. You’ll have to just watch the season for yourself to find out who though!
There aren’t as many special features as I expected, only 3 of them plus one extended episode, but I really liked "A Journey Home With Kevin McKidd." I had no clue that he is Scottish but I absolutely love his normal accent, which is nothing like how he sounds as Dr. Owen Hunt. It was really neat to see him in Scotland and just made me want to visit it even more! It’s a pretty long feature at almost 15 minutes. The Deleted Scenes and Outtakes are very much like from the previous seasons. There aren’t any scenes that really would change the series if they were left in and the Outtakes are highly amusing. If you’re looking for a great drama or you’re already a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, then you really need to pick up Grey’s Anatomy: Complete Eighth Season today!
