Bong of the Dead opens to show us the meteorites that fall from the sky, bringing with them the plague of zombies. We get to see a bit of how the infection starts and spreads, but quickly things jump to 6 months later. The military has several of the areas cleared and the rest are marked as the "Danger Zone" so that people know to stay out. The movie centers on two stoners, Tommy (Jy Harris) and Edwin (Mark Wynn). These guys smoke so much pot that I'm not sure how they function, much less how they survived an apocalypse. Somehow though, miraculously they have survived and even thrived as Edwin has figured out that if you use zombie brains as fertilizer, the pot will grow giant and quickly in minutes. With zombie brains as fertilizer, they will never have to worry about running out of pot again. But they have a problem. Since the government has cleared their area of zombies, they have no brains to use. They haven't seen a zombie in months. They get the bright idea to go to the Danger Zone and bring back a load of zombie brains to replenish their low supply. Brilliant, huh?
First, these two get themselves into a bit of a predicament when they are kidnapped by Alex Montgomery Dickens III (Barry Nerling), a zombie who can talk and think. Luck favors these idiots though and they make it a bit further and meet up with Leah (Simone Bailly). Leah has survived on her own since the initial outbreak after her family was all turned. She's a very inventive gal who comes up with a zombie-powered shower so that she can have some running water. I'm not sure why she puts up with these guys, but I guess she's been lonely. Finally, she decides that she will help them in their plight to find more fertilizer, if they can survive, that is.
There were several things that we were left wondering about, such as why Alex can talk, who the zombie was that was powering Leah's shower, and quite a few other things, but given that it is more of a comedy than anything, we just let that go. I will tell you to just stop watching the movie when it says "The End." Everything that came after that did set it up for a sequel, but just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the film at all. It would have been much better to just have it at the beginning of the next one.
As I said, Bong of the Dead is very bloody and gory. It also has a few unresolved plot points, but if you go into it expecting to watch a very dark comedy, you will most likely find yourself laughing at a few things.
