The first time the woman calls, she asks for asks Bobby and when Mary tells her that she just moved in, the caller hangs up. Mary just dismisses it as a wrong number and continues to try and settle into her new place alone. The caller calls back the next night and says to tell Bobby that Rose (Lorna Raver) called and he should meet her at Frank's at 8. She also says that she knows he is there because she saw him leave last night. Of course, this is a little disturbing to Mary, but she still figures that it is just a wrong number and the woman will go away, so she continues on with her life starting with taking a class in Conversational French. She accidentally goes to the wrong classroom and meets John (Stephen Moyer) there. You can tell that he's attracted to her, but she just goes on to her correct classroom.
Rose calls again and tells Mary that "Bobby says he doesn't know you." She tells Mary that Bobby proposed to her when he got back from Vietnam like it just recently happened. The next time Rose calls, she says that it is September 4th, 1979 and she says that she can prove it. She tells Mary that she will draw a rose on the pantry wall. When Mary peels off layers of old paint and wallpaper, she finds the Rose that Rose drew, which naturally creeps her out! At the grocery, she runs into John again and it scares the hell out of her because she's so jumpy over Rose's message. Mary decides to try and find out more about Rose. She asks George who lived in the apartment before her and what happened to them, but he says they just left and he doesn't remember the people before that. Mary doesn't believe him, but she can't do anything else right now.
When Rose calls back, Mary starts conversing with Rose as if they are friends, even if she's not sure what's going on. Mary tells Rose that she should leave her husband, if he's cheating on her. The next time Mary goes into the pantry, it has changed. There is a brick wall where there wasn't one before. Rose calls and says that she got rid of her husband and they'll never find him. Mary knows the body is hidden in her pantry and she tells Rose never to call her again. After her next class, when she goes out to her car, she sees someone in it so she runs back in and asks John to help her. When he goes to the car, there is no one there. She goes for coffee with John at his parent's restaurant, and he walks her home and leaves. When she goes inside, her ex-husband is there, even though she has a restraining order against him. Luckily, John comes back because he forgot his jacket and runs Steven off. The next time Rose calls back, she threatens Mary that she will talk to her again or else.
Mary convinces George to tell her what happened to Rose and he tells her that Rose hung herself when her boyfriend left her. Mary confides all of this to John and he explains a theory of what could have happened, but says that he doesn't really believe it. He thinks Steven is responsible and they should pull down the wall in the pantry to see if they find a body or not, but Mary refuses to touch the wall. Things start to get really desperate when George disappears and no one, not even John, remembers that he existed. Rose can destroy Mary, but Mary has no clue how to stop her. What would you do if someone started changing your past on you?
There are a few special features available. There is an Alternate Ending that personally I liked a bit better. There are also some Deleted Scenes. If they had left in the deleted scene called "Psychiatric Ward," it would have helped make things make more sense. I can see why they deleted the rest, though. Overall, The Caller was a decent movie but a bit predicable at times, at least until the end. I'm not sure I liked the ending, but maybe that's just me.
