The "Cul-de-sac Crew," as they have taken to calling themselves, has a bit of a shake-up when Travis (Dan Byrd) goes away to college, but thankfully, college is only 20 minutes away, so he shows up frequently. He finds love at college in the form of blonde 23-year-old grad student named Kirsten, who steals his heart, only to later dash his dreams.
Jules' ex Bobby (Brian Van Holt) is doing quite well teaching golf lessons, but everything changes when he, Lori (Busy Philipps) and Andy (Ian Gomez) work together to monetize "Penny Can," the game he created. Sometimes you have to let go of one thing to gain another and Bobby soon discovers this.
Ellie (Christa Miller) and Andy have their hands full with a rapidly growing baby Stan, but still find the time to hang out with the group, mostly thanks to a new nanny. Lori finds herself reeling when straight-laced boyfriend Smith dumps her, but she bounces back quickly enough with the help of her buddies.
The season closes with Jules getting quite a shock when Grayson shares with her his strong desire for kids, although Jules is done with that part of her life. Can the duo weather this new storm, especially since Jules forgets her birth control when the crew takes a fun-filled trip to Hawaii to try and bring Travis back home?
Cougar Town seems to have found its stride in the form of alcohol-soaked hilarious comedy. These people are serious drinkers. I mean never-even-heard-of-the-12-steps type of serious drinkers. But I must admit, the show's fast-paced comedy works and I really love the way comedic callbacks will pop up in later episodes, like Jules' finger guns and Ellie tipping her imaginary hat. Towards the end of the season, however, it seems the show got sponsored by Diet Dr. Pepper (at least Bobby was trying to get them to sponsor him) and Subway appeared a good bit, either being served for dinner or appearing behind them as they sat in the town square. The product placement was a little annoying.
Overall, Cougar Town: The Complete Second Season is funny stuff and worth watching. I'm interested to see where things are headed, as I don't really see Jules with a baby, but we shall see. The special features include a blooper reel, deleted scenes, a featurette on the evolution of the series this season and finally, a collection of webisodes called Andy's Dreams, based on his daily siestas. Honestly, the making-of was a bit dry, I didn't find Andy's Dreams very funny with the song and dance number or spoof of Miami Vice, the deleted scenes were deleted for a reason and the blooper reel was just so-so. That being said, get Cougar Town: Season Two for the comedy gold in each episode, not for the extras. Although I think the show focuses a bit too much on drinking, it's still funny stuff and the characters and silly and loveable. Believable? No. Funny? Hell yes!
