Following last season's finale which had Jenny (Mia Kirshner) walking in on Shane (Katherine Moennig) and Jenny's very-newly ex-girlfriend Niki Stevens (Kate French), a huge blow-up ensues and Jenny, having just realized she was in love with Shane right before, is completely devastated and wants nothing to do with Shane or Niki. Shane spends a number of episodes being at Jenny's beck and call and doing whatever she can to get back into the good graces of her best friend and roommate. Niki, on the other hand, vows revenge after Jenny does call her back to her house, only to use her for the night and then kick her out like trash. Eventually, Jenny and Shane make up and Jenny declares her love for Shane and the two begin a relationship. Unfortunately, Jenny is a smotherer and Shane eventually feels boxed in and cheats on her.
Meanwhile, the negative of Jenny's film, Lez Girls, gets stolen by someone and Tina (Laurel Holloman) eventually loses her job because of it, since the boss assumes Jenny did it, but Jenny denies this. When Tina does some business in New York, she is offered a lucrative position but the job entails moving to New York and she and Bette (Jennifer Beals) decide to make the move across country. This is a huge move since they had recently decided to expand their family by adopting a new baby and to also expand their home and make it a two story. But the adoption doesn't quite work out in the end.
Funny thing is, Max (Daniela Sea), having gotten almost to the point that he can have his trans-gender surgery and finally become a man, finds out he is pregnant! I never really understood Max anyway. He was a lesbian female who likes girls who gets involved with a gay man who likes boys. Wasn't the point to become a man so he could date girls? Anyway, I actually thought it was a really funny predicament he found himself in. He was the only "mom" in Lamaze class with a full beard. Seems like the obvious choice would be to give the baby to Bette and Tina, but this never happens.
Helena (Rachel Shelley) gets involved once again with Dylan (Alexandra Hedison), the same girl who accused her of sexual harrasment and bilked her out of lots of money. Dylan proclaims Helena is the love of her life, but is she scamming again? Helena feels she can never know for sure, because even when Dylan is put to the test and passes, she discovers Dylan was on to them the whole time.
Alice (Leisha Haley) and Tasha (Rose Rollins) are having trouble in their relationship and they go to couples' counseling, which doesn't go so well when the therapist tells them they don't belong together. Soon, they meet Jamie (Mei Melancon), a girl who works at the gay community center for teens. She becomes their "third wheel crush" and puts a spark back into their relationship. Unfortunately, Alice and Tasha both start to fall for Jamie, but Jamie develops feelings for Tasha, leaving Alice in the proverbial cold. Does Tasha choose Jamie or Alice? Alice's troubles don't end there; when she writes a treatment/screenplay and asks Jenny to look at it and give her pointers, Jenny says its worthless, then turns around and sells the exact same idea for a half a million dollars. Alice feels deeply betrayed and vows revenge.
The season finale ends in a going away party for Bette and Tina in which Jenny dies mysteriously, drowning in the pool. Any number of guests could have done it and by the end of the episode, they pretty much all have motive. Sadly, the mystery is never solved because the show was supposed to have a spin-off to solve the mystery, but it wasn't picked up. Plenty more happens in the season, including a few appearances by Elizabeth Berkley as Kelly Wentworth, a former college crush of Bette's and someone who Bette actually goes into partnership with in a gallery - drama and tension ensues. I was really disappointed in the cliffhanger ending and, quite frankly, the show had run its course, but they could have at least provided some resolution. Obviously, if you have been watching, you'll want to see how it all plays out, but since they leave you hanging, maybe you won't. The special features are for hardcore fans only and most have to be accessed through your PC, which is something Showtime is stupidly famous for. This one's a rental at best, unless you are trying to complete your collection.
