Needless to say, hilarity ensues. Margaret is not the type of woman who fares well in the wilds of Alaska. To her, any place without a high speed internet connection is practically the frozen tundra. Imagine her surprise when she comes to find that Andrew's family practically owns the island and he is quite wealthy in his own right. Although Andrew knows all there is to know about Margaret, she must rapidly learn all she can about him if they are going to pass the immigration test. As the two reveal sides of themselves to each other that they never knew, and spend more and more time together, they find themselves falling for each other, strangely enough. When Andrew's parents announce that they want the couple to marry on Gammy's birthday while everyone is all together, the couple find themselves in an inescapable quandry. Can two people who hated each other just three days before really go through with this?
The Proposal is an absolutely hysterical film, with lots of physical comedy from both Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. The two have obvious chemisty and really worked well together in quite a believable fashion. Betty White is terrific, as always, and Mary Steenbergen and Craig T. Nelson play the perfect parents to Andrew, she as the doting mom and he as the never-satisfied dad. Malin Akerman (The Heartbreak Kid) is adorable as Andrew's former love interest, Gert, and she's the perfect girl to get Margaret's jealous side to come out. Oscar Nunez stars as Ramone, Sitka's everyman, showing up in numerous and often surprising jobs around the island.
The casting was great and the story was precious. This is a terrific romantic comedy and we enjoyed every minute of it. While the special features are sparse, they are worth watching. There are a few deleted scenes (you get one extra scene on the Blu-ray version, mind you), some bloopers/outtakes/general comedic antics and an alternate ending, but I much preferred the one they went with. If you like a good popcorn flick, this is one to check out. It's meatier than it appears to be in the previews we've all seen, although every bit as funny as you would expect. Highly recommended.
