The Stooges are slapstick comedy at its finest. Their antics may be overly predictable and repetitive, but the trio always manages to find a way to make even the most overly used cliché seem like something new and original. Okay, so maybe that's going a little too far - but it is hard not to laugh even when you know that eye gouge or lame joke is coming your way.
One of Volume Six's more pleasant surprises was the inclusion of shorts I hadn't seen before. I remember seeing a bunch of Shemp shorts growing up, but it seems like a majority of the ones re-packaged for broadcast featured Curly. One of the better shorts in the collection is "Don't Throw That Knife," where the guys improv using items they find in a room.
The boys didn't miss a beat with the addition of Shemp, and with the latest volume, its clear that the trio has found the sweet spot with its chemistry. Shemp brings a different comedic style to the group. There's a certain method to Shemp's style that is almost the polar opposite of Curly's off-the-wall wackiness. This ends up working better for most of the shorts. Shemp comes off as just a tad more competent, making some of the group's antics a little more believable.
As always, there are no extras.
It's no Volume Three, but The Three Stooges: Volume Six is easily one of the better volumes in the collection and worth adding to your collection.
