In my opinion, The Spectacular Spider-Man: Volume 3 is where the series really picks up a bit. After Spider-Man had refused to get on Tombstone's payroll, he ends up having to protect Tombstone from a new menace, the Green Goblin (Steve Blum), in order to save innocent lives at one of Tombstone's events... At one point, Tombstone points out the irony that Spidey's fighting to stop an attack on his person for free, when he had refused to work for Tombstone and be paid handsomely for the same exact work.

In fact, while the three episodes contained in Volume 3 are stand-alone episodes, the Green Goblin acts as a common thread that ties them all together. We first see the Green Goblin in Catalysts, then, while Doctor Octopus becomes his super-villainous self in the second episode in this volume (Reaction), he is transformed into Doctor Octopus (when his mechanical arms fuse to his spine) by none other than the Green Goblin. Finally, the Green Goblin meets his apparent demise in the last episode in this volume, The Uncertainty Principle, and the mystery of who, exactly, was the Green Goblin appears to become a mystery that simply won't be solved. Well, at least that's how Spidey figures he'll leave it to the rest of the world, after finding out that the Green Goblin is actually someone who needs medical help... and someone he knows... but not who he suspected.

The gorgeous Mary Jane (Vanessa Marshall) shows up in Volume Three, as the hot love-interest / girl-next-door that Aunt May had been telling Peter had a "great personality." Catalysts is the episode that features this series' version of the "Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot" scene.

If you're a Spider-Man fan and you like the artistic style used in The Spectacular Spider-Man, then you're bound to like Volume 3. I highly recommend it.
