If you haven't seen the first Friday the 13th movie in years, then this might come as a bit of a shock to you. Jason Voorhees does not appear in the first movie, except as a small blurb near the end. Of course, you'll probably realize that he's not the killer in the first one as soon as the first person dies. She gets a ride to the camp with the unknown killer. She willingly hops in the car with them, and who in their right mind would hop in the car with a guy in a hockey mask? Jason's mom, Mrs. Voorhees, turns out to be the killer in the first one. She is avenging the death of her son, Jason. When she is killed, it wakes Jason up from the lake.
Friday the 13th: Part 2 - Deluxe Edition starts out showing us what has happened to Alice (Adrienne King) in the 2 months since she was the only survivor of Mrs. Voorhees. Then we skip to 5 years later. I'm sure after watching the first one that there are a couple of questions in your minds. First, if the mom was the killer in the first one and she died, who is going to be the killer in the sequel? Second, who in their right mind would try and reopen Camp Crystal Lake after the slaughter that just occurred there?
I'm going to skip the first question for now, because I'm sure you know the answer to it anyway. As to the second one, at least for now, they're not so stupid as to try and reopen Camp Crystal Lake. Instead, Paul Holt (John Furey) has decided to open a training camp for camp counselors. He's got around 20 experienced counselors there to teach them more about survival skills and other useful things. Little do they know that those survival skills will definitely be put to the test. Not much really happens until about half of the counselors go into town for a last night on the town before their serious training begins. The ones left in camp are in for a very rough night.
As to the answer to that first question I posed, I'm sure you all know that Jason is going to be the killer in this movie. But he doesn't really look like the Jason that you're used to in the later movies. Instead of his signature hockey mask, he simply has a burlap sack over his horribly disfigured face. He also seems less powerful and less dangerous than he is in some of the later movies. But less dangerous is still bad enough. Not to mention he is obviously insane since he is keeping his mother's severed head around to keep him company. I guess you just can't separate some boys from their mothers. Now the big question is who, if anyone, will survive this massacre?
Just like in the first Friday the 13th DVD, this one has quite a few special features as well. My personal favorite was "Jason Forever." At the Fangoria Convention in 2004, they got four of the previous Jason actors together on a panel. They all answered questions about their interpretation of Jason and what they've been doing since then. It was really neat to see them all together. There's also a feature with scenes from a horror convention that was quite entertaining. If you watched the "Lost Tales - Part 1" special feature on the first Friday the 13 film, you'll be glad to know that Part 2 is on this DVD. Overall, the special features alone make the movie worth buying. Even if they weren't in there, I highly recommend that you get this movie. The Friday the 13th movies are simply classic. They were made on limited budgets and yet are still quite scary! You should go pick up this second volume today, I promise you won't regret it.
