Previously on The Walking Dead: A New Frontier:
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier: Episode 5 - From the Gallows concludes the season-long story following Javier and his family of survivors and their unexpected reunion with Javier's brother, David.

Episode 4 - Thicker Than Water ended with David being put on "trial" by Joan and Clint, two other leaders of The New Frontier and Richmond. The chaos that stemmed from that confrontation leads to the events of From the Gallows. With David having killed either Joan or Clint (based on your past decisions), a hole in the wall letting Walkers pour into the city, and everyone scattering, Richmond has quickly turned into a very unsafe place. It's up to Javier to regather his friends and family and decide what to do. They can either try and help Richmond survive and rebuild, or leave with the hopes of staying ahead of the herd that is invading the streets.

A Way Forward:
Like the past episodes this season, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier: Episode 5 - From the Gallows starts off with a flashback to events just before the zombie apocalypse. In this case, it follows Javier, David, and their father as they finish a game of dominoes. During this scene, Javier and David find out that their father has cancer and doesn't have much time left. Not only that, he hasn't told their mother yet and he doesn't seem to plan to either. The confrontations Javier is faced with during this flashback will come up again later in this episode as Javier's father requests a promise of the younger son, and Javier will be forced to either try and keep that promise or break it before everything is over.

Back in the present, Javier has to find whomever he can in the crowd and make his way to safety in a building filled with other survivors who are waiting out the herd's incursion into the city. Once everyone has had a chance to collect themselves, the group decides they need to do something to close the wall caused by Kate's crash, and while David knows where to get the necessary construction equipment, the path is treacherous and not everyone who joins them on the trek will make it there.

Along that path, the group will have to handle a few unusual situations that include everything from using a downed helicopter to get across a chasm, to Javier learning an old trick of Clementine's in order to sneak through an area densely populated by Walkers.

Tough Decisions:
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier: Episode 5 - From the Gallows has more than a few key decisions to work out. As the episode progresses, David gets more and more suspicious about the budding relationship between Javier and Kate. Before everything plays out, David's hot head and jealousy will cause the brothers to come to blows. While I don't see any long-term effects from how this particular situation plays out, primarily because this is the last episode in the season, what you choose will help to complete Javier's story arc regarding his feelings towards his brother and Kate.

Javier will be faced with another decision not long after that confrontation. The group will want to split up. Some members will want to leave Richmond as a lost cause, while others will want to stick to the plan and use the construction equipment to repair the walls and start cleaning out the city to make it better than it was before. Javier and Clementine must decide which group to join and that choice will lead to one or more of Javier's survivors either dead or missing (and presumed dead). If Javier and his family show up in a later season, then this decision could lead to some interesting consequences, but if this episode is the end of Javier's journey, then those final losses help to mold his character one last time.

Next Time on The Walking Dead:
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier: Episode 5 - From the Gallows wraps up the story surrounding Javier and his family in a way that allows the Telltale series to either continue following the group, or start up a new adventure with a new set of survivors. It will be interesting to see how your choices in Richmond affect the rest of the world and if any of the choices made in A New Frontier will become apparent in the next season of the game. It is clear by the time the season ends that at least one character will continue on and if nothing else, the choices made during these events will affect that character's journey in a very similar way the choices made in previous seasons affected Clementine.

While I still feel like A New Frontier is the weaker of the three main seasons of the game series so far, I think a lot of that has to do with the drastic shift in focus off of Clementine and the introduction to a completely new group of survivors. A New Frontier almost feels like a spin-off that contains Clem rather than the main series where the young survivor is the main character. That being said, I still enjoyed it and feel any fan of the past seasons of the game will like how everything plays out.
