Mierdaster is a Chilean group with four members. Cristián Lueje plays the drums; Mauricio Almazan sings and plays bass. Martin Capdevila and Claudio Melo both play guitars and sing as well. Together these four manage to produce a very well put together and loud sound. They open the album with a song called "La Envidia," which translates to "Envy." Do not ask me what they lyrics mean to any of these songs as I don’t speak Spanish and I couldn't find the lyrics online to translate. Granted, they are all in the CD liner if you would like to translate for me. I like the first song. It is a good example of their various skills with more of an emphasis on the music rather than the vocals. It quite reminds me of Pantera’s "Walk" musically. I really liked the bass solo in it. The album continues on a steady metal sound. The fourth song, "Idiosincrasia" is a bit slower than the previous songs, but yet heavier and more guttural sounding.
The second half of the album is just as heavy as the first, continuing a sound reminiscent of the original thrash metal bands. Personally, I still love the sound. To me, Mierdaster’s album sounds like they took all the old school thrash bands, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and of course Slayer, and paid homage to their music. None of it sounds like they copied any of these bands, but rather they took the best of the sounds and blended it into their own, which is a damned impressive feat!
If you’re looking for a solid thrash metal band, check out Mierdaster’s La Furia. Be warned that it is 100% in Spanish, including everything in the liner notes, but I've found that I really like how metal sounds in Spanish. In a weird way, the language seems to fit perfectly with the sound of the music, so I don’t even mind that I can’t understand it... yet.
