One of the bigger PSN-related announcements was the new PS3 Video Store, which goes live tonight (Now that’s the type of announcements I like to see!). The store will include movies and television shows from Sony Pictures, as well as from partners like Disney, MGM, Turner Entertainment, Lionsgate and Warner. At launch, the service will boast nearly 300 full length movies and over 1200 television episodes. Among the available launch titles are: Spider-Man, 10,000 B.C., Rocky, Jumper and 3:10 to Yuma (which is a great movie, download it first!).

The purchase system is integrated into your existing PSN network account and uses the same interface used to purchase games and download demos. Television shows will cost around $1.99 and movies will be available in both standard and HD resolutions, with prices ranging from $9.99 to $14.99. Rentals are also available for $2.99 - $5.99. After purchasing rentals, you’ll have 14-days to watch before it is deleted. Once playback is started, you must finish it within 24 hours. If you’re not sure about a movie, you can also watch a trailer before committing to the purchase. Download times will vary based on connection, though the system uses a streaming system that will allow you to begin viewing movies about a minute after the download starts.

A new firmware update (which should already be available) will allow you to download purchased video content onto the PSP for viewing – which doesn’t bode well for UMD. Content can be uploaded to the PSP either via the PS3 or though a PC.
